I think that this will have a knock on effect ...

Valentine's Day 2014: The North East's 14 favourite romantic films

I love a romantic film here are my favourite from The North East's 14 favourite romantic films for Valentine's Day .

"3. Dirty Dancing (1987, directed by Emile Ardolino)
Ah. I'm being careful not to dismiss too many of these films as predictable, because there is little more predictable than a 35-year-old woman listing this among her favourite films (romantic or not). If you were a schoolgirl in the 1980s you couldn't help but fall for Patrick Swayze's dashing Johnny Castle, a holiday camp summer season dance star who sweeps a young, impressionable but secretly steely Baby (Jennifer Grey) off her feet. The plot has little more than a holiday romance at its heart, but as a coming-of-age movie packed with moments we wish had happened to us, it can't be beaten. It also has the coolest soundtrack of any of my 14 short-listed films, including Swayze's own croon-tastic She's Like the Wind. "

Why I love Dirty Dancing
1) The music soundtrack to this film is amazing The Drifters Otis Redding and The Contours Do You Love Me
2) Patric Swayze
3) I love the dancing in Dirty Dancing typical as it may seem this film has influenced my life !

"9. Titanic (1997, directed by James Cameron)
This epic disaster movie swept the board at the Oscars but if there'd been one for chemistry between leads, Kate Winslet and Leo di Caprio would have had a shot at that, too. They star as doomed lovers on the doomed ocean liner in a story which has well over 90 minutes of romance before, well, doom strikes. As a silly 18-year-old I cried buckets at the cinema; my more practical 35-year-old self now watches the ending in annoyance, because there was definitely room on that bit of mirror for the pair of them. "

I love Titanic as it is based on a real event. Don't worry I don't think that the love story was true but I just cant resist DiCaprio as Jack Dawson in Titanic.

Tony Montana: I always tell the truth. Even when I lie.

Tony Montana: What you lookin' at? You all a bunch of fuckin' assholes. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!

American Hustle Film Review

The first film I went to the cinema to watch this year was American Hustle Running time 138 mins.
I loved the film it was humorous and entertaining.
I particularly liked Jennifer Lawrence's role in the film as she was witty and heart warming as we see her life panned out and rejected.

I also thought Christian Bale transformation was amazing. With make up and what I imagine to be latex looking so realistic. I had heard reviews of his vast change in appearance but did not expect such a sight even in modern day film.

This film focuses more on the individual characters rather than the story line of the hustle but is still an amazing watch.

I would advice anyone to watch this film.

Film watchdog guidelines published

The British Board of Film Classification will be looking at how films will be certificated and will be paying closer attention to the " psychological impact of horror" examining "gore" among the strong visual detail which may be featured in films.
As we are studying British horror I thought that it would be in the interest of many to post this new change .
They said "We and the film industry will work during 2014 to improve understanding of this very important rating," he said.

One film that has caused much debate is  The Woman In Black with a rating of a 12 A I believe the film should be a rating of a 15. But the BBFC say that it had been correctly issued with a 12A
certificate.
http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/film-watchdog-guidelines-published-104908125.html

Another great article on the matter http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/david-cooke/film-ratings-bbfc_b_4567743.html
Here it explains how the BBFC will deal with the certification of horror films
A few goals include
• We will give even greater weight to the theme and tone of a film or video, particularly around the 12A/12 and 15 level;

I believe this is a great idea as I think people can get confused at what young people should really be viewing.

• We will particularly take into account the psychological impact of horror as well as strong visual detail, such as gore.;

No one can tell what effect a film may have on a young viewer I think personal temperament should be taken into account and maybe a new certificate to introduce. People are more sensitive to others but should this just be left to the individual to decide or should advice be given in reviews or Dvd covers ?

• in relation to sexual content, the public is particularly concerned about the sexualisation of girls and pornography. The content of music videos and the ease of accessibility of online porn are special worries;

I believe that BBFC should introduce a new film certificate of 16 only persons this age can watch a film with sexual content in.

• on language, the public urged us to be both stricter with the sort of language we allow at U and more flexible about allowing very strong language at 15, stressing that context, not just frequency, is the most important factor in how they perceive language in films.

I think that swearing can make a film and depending on the content I don't see the harm in the odd F word of such is viewed by a mature audience.

WEEK 16 McQueen film set for Bafta success

More info on 12 Years A Slave
Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave continued its award season success by picking up 10 nominations at the Baftas.
Yet again only positive reviews of 12 Years A Slave that is enhanced by the Bafta nominations.

Lupita Nyong'o and Michael Fassbender are nominated for supporting actress and actor respectively.

The other contenders for best film include Philomena, Captain Phillips, American Hustle and Gravity.

The  EE British Academy Film Awards will be held in London on Sunday February 16.

Film Review: 12 Years a Slave

I am very eager to see the film 12 Years a Slave. This film review has only increased my interest about seeing this film.
Based on a true story (which always seems to interest me more)

The Plot
"Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from New York who is drugged by two white men who make his acquaintance and sold into slavery. Unable to contact his wife and children and broken by the violence of his captivity, he is smuggled into the South where he is sold to slave owner William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch)." from the article follow the link for more.

"A life in slavery was bloody, brutal and often short. None of that is glossed over here."from the article follow the link for more.

2013: a good year for film?

2013 saw films such as Man Of Steel ,  Gravity  and , Filth.
See how Paul Taylor sees these films as flawed and what films he liked last year.

A particular section that interested me was the review of foreign films in 2013.

"2013 was, however, an exceptional year for foreign language cinema.
It’s a big world out there and the films that are made in it are varied, interesting and occasionally wonderful. If you open your mind to cinema outside of the UK and the USA then you are in for a treat.
My top three films not in the English language, as the Oscars would put it, are Love Is All Around (a Danish romantic drama), Bullhead (from Belgium featuring a breath-taking performance from Matthias Schoenaerts ) and Post Tenebras Lux (a strange drama from Mexico)."

Find out more about foreign films to come in 2014 it is estimated out of the 76 countries being considered only 5 may make it to the UK cinemas and even then they will be in select cinemas.

A little section about the film Nebraska that our class recently went to see is also on their and has an interesting post on 84-year old June Squibb she "is a true revelation in Alexander Payne’s darkly joyous Nebraska. Playing Bruce Dern’s wife." Read more following the link.
